Downriver Compost Box & Service Grand Canyon: $10.00 flat fee Other Rivers: $10.00 flat fee For composting on the river: Ceiba Adventures can provide your river trip with a composting system (20 mils) to collect food scraps during your trip – usually 1-2 boxes per trip depending on number of people and days. Anything organic can go into the bucket with the exception of meat and dairy products, and human waste. This can include plate scrapings, food prep scraps, coffee grounds, leftovers, etc. Collecting food waste will save room in your trash cans and go to a good cause of providing the “greens” material for the compost process instead of going to the landfill. What will the compost be used for? After your trip all your composting goes directly to the Colton Community Garden (CCG) at the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA - yes, the same MNA that the rapid at River Mile 27 is named after). Your food scraps will be combined with “browns” in a large- scale compost program at the garden to be utilized in the future to benefit crops as organic fertilizer. The CCG is an educational heritage garden that is dedicated to the cultivation of traditional crops grown on the Colorado Plateau. The garden is located on MNA grounds across the street from the main museum. It is run and managed by a dedicated all-volunteer team. The garden serves as a “living exhibition” for visitors to MNA and is always open to the public, visitors are welcome to tour the grounds at any time.
